Austin, located in south central Texas, is the Texas state capital and the Travis County seat.  It has an area of 258.43 square miles (2000). The city of Waterloo was renamed as Austin in 1839 in honor of Stephen F.  Austin, the “Father of Texas”.  Austin has a series of lakes for more than 100 miles, created by the Colorado River, which flows through the center of the city.  Austin experiences subtropical climate with hot summers, rain during late spring-early fall, and mild winters with rare snowfall.

The number of households in Austin with income of less than $10,000 was 24,799 and households with income of  $200,000 or more were 7,377 during the year 1999.  The population of Austin in the year 2000 was 1,249,763 with a density of 2,610.4 people per square mile.  The population comprised of Whites (429,100), Black or African American (65,956), American Indian and Alaska Native (3,889), Asian (30,960), Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (469), Hispanic or Latino (200,579), and others (518,810).  The total number of births in the year 2002 was 12,387.  The total number of deaths in the year 2002 was 3,370 out of which 59 were infants under the age of 1 year.  The 2002 FBI Crime Index was 42,979.
